Sermon Notes

Introduction

Rom 12: 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Honoring one another is birthed out of love for one another. The trademark of the church must be its love for one another and for the world.

John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

When we love one another we truly display that we are sons and daughters of God.
God loves us unconditionally, and so we must love unconditionally. The most powerful type of love is displayed when the recipient is not worthy of that love. Does this not remind you of God’s heart towards us? ;

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 8:39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

a. The example of Jesus Christ:

Matt 20 : 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Jesus has set the example for us and we need to follow His example.
If Jesus served, so must we.
We must understand that serving is not an option but a command given to us.
Serving others is a trademark of the Kingdom of God. And one of the forms of serving one another is HONORING.

“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33, ESV)
The heart towards one another should be:
“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” (ESV)

THEREFORE: Love, servanthood, and honoring are all connected and an expression of those who love the King and desiring to do His Will.

b. Ways to show honor:

1. Consider others needs above your own:

Phil 2: 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

2. Look for opportunities to give unto others so that they may be blessed:

Prov 11: 24 Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.
Proverbs 11:25 a generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

When it comes to blessing people don’t be stingy. Give the best you can. Give extravagantly and see how God will bless you .

3. Honor another in Word and Action:

Honor can be showed in action, word, or thought, but all true honor originates from the heart.
“ God said that people honored me with their actions and lips but not from the heart.”
When we honor someone in word and action it means we live out that what has originated in our hearts.
One of the greatest lack of honor is shown in the way we speak about people and act towards them.
Our actions cannot be different that our hearts conviction.

4 . Honor someone by spending time with them:

Solid relationships are built in spending time with one another.
We honor God, by giving Him the best of our day.
We honor people, by spending time with them.
Make sure you don’t miss out on vital relationships by not spending enough time developing them.
